Mathematica Appoints New Officers

As Mathematica Policy Research continues to grow and diversify its offerings, we are pleased to announce the appointment of new officers to lead the company.

Appointment of Myles Maxfield as Senior Vice President

Myles Maxfield has been named senior vice president. In this role, he will continue to direct Mathematica's rapidly growing data analytics work. In particular, he will build on recent work applying advanced data analytic methods, such as predictive models, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning models, to pressing policy issues in federal and state health care reform, program integrity, social services, education, and nutrition programs.

"Over the past four decades, Myles has filled nearly every research leadership role in the company, including senior fellow, director of Health Research, area leader, and vice president. He is a respected researcher, mentor, and leader both inside and outside of Mathematica and embodies our culture and values," said Paul Decker, CEO and president of Mathematica.

Maxfield, who has been with the firm for 40 years, is an active project director and principal investigator, and a prolific presenter and author. In this new role, he will continue to oversee Mathematica's health care quality measurement and improvement; technical assistance and decision support to Medicaid agencies and care providers; program integrity; and health insurance exchanges.

Appointment of Tamara Barnes as Vice President

Tamara Barnes has been named vice president, general counsel, and board secretary. In this role, she will continue to address and identify legal issues; contribute to company management, processes, and governance; and represent the company externally to clients, external counsel, and the board of directors.

"Since joining Mathematica in 2010 as the company's first general counsel, Tamara has defined and developed the role," said Decker. "With these new responsibilities, she will ensure we have the legal, governance, and compliance systems and support to meet the growing needs of our clients."

Appointment of Greg Farah as Vice President, Director of Data Analytics Technology

Mathematica welcomes Greg Farah as vice president and director of data analytics technology. Based in the company's Washington, DC, office, Farah comes to Mathematica from Northrop Grumman, where, among other responsibilities, he led business development at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Previously, he held positions at CGI and BearingPoint.

"Greg is a seasoned data analytics professional with extensive expertise to bring to bear on this emerging arena of work," said Decker. "We look forward to his contributions as we continue to expand and refine our offerings to help us achieve our mission, informing policy issues for those most in need."

Appointment of Tim Lake as Vice President

Tim Lake has been named vice president and director of Health Research in our Washington, DC, office. During his tenure at Mathematica, Lake has served in a variety of management positions and also as project director and principal investigator on more than a dozen projects focused on health care performance measurement and payment reform. He is a respected leader whose day-to-day actions support Mathematica's mission and commitment to high quality and collegiality.

"Since joining Mathematica in 1991, Tim has made substantial contributions to the Health Research Division as a leader, manager, and project team member. We look forward to his continued contributions in this new position," said Decker.

 

In addition to the new officers, two existing officers are taking on new roles and responsibilities in 2015.

Appointment of Diane Herz as Director of Survey Research

,Diane Herz vice president at Mathematica since 2009, has been appointed director of Survey Research, expanding her responsibilities to oversight of the Survey Research staff company-wide. In this position, she will contribute to strategic and business planning as well as lend oversight and quality assurance on projects for the Department of Labor and other agencies.

"We're delighted that Diane's strong and experienced leadership will help guide our Survey Research team as the field continues to evolve and develop," said Decker.

Appointment of Lisa Schwartz as Vice President for Business Practice

Lisa Schwartz, a vice president who has been director of Survey Research since 2008, has been appointed Mathematica's first vice president for business practice. In this new role, she will be responsible for collaborating with other Mathematica leadership to develop business processes, systems, and support. She will direct several special initiatives such as investigating ways to better incorporate administrative data into study designs.

"After nearly a decade at Mathematica, Lisa has the depth and breadth of experience to take on initiatives focused on improving our internal practices and their connection to the outside market," said Decker.
